Obsession.
Single Screen Moving Images, 6’17”, 2022
Obsession. intricately weaves a woman’s yearning to merge with seawater, symbolizing her longing for unattainable intimacy. Through surreal visuals, the film traces her transformative quest, blurring the boundaries between human desire and nature’s depths, and inviting reflection on longing and the allure of the unreachable.
Rooted in a distinctly female perspective, Obsession. captures a profound craving for closeness as vast and mysterious as the sea. The protagonist’s journey to become seawater embodies a romanticized longing, constrained by sexual repression, in search of a mythical union with the ocean’s essence. Research into the salinity disparity between the human body and seawater informed the film’s symbolic use of salt—a stark reminder of our inherent separation from the sea.
By adorning her body with salt, the protagonist becomes a haunting visual metaphor for the female gaze’s romantic and relentless fixation. This image reflects the cruel reality of her obsession, evolving from restrained desire to brutal self-injury in the pursuit of oneness with the ocean’s depth.
Through this filmic odyssey, Obsession. explores the treacherous terrain of longing. It unfolds as a cautionary tale about the complex interplay between romantic yearning, sexual repression, and the violent extremes of obsession. The protagonist’s transformation reveals the fragile boundary between desire and its painful, consuming consequences.
